BrandsMart USA

Bobby Johnson
Chief Operations Officer

Nepotism

Bobby Johnson is the son of Randy Johnson, the Chief Merchandising Officer for BrandsMart USA.

Met Bobby Johnson the first time when he was the General Manager of the Deerfield BrandsMart USA location.

Wrong Foot

Interaction with Bobby Johnson got off to the wrong foot when, when one of his Department Manager’s from his Deerfield Beach location arrived late to a training meeting and failing to follow direction, took me out like a “linebacker.”

BrandsMart USA Human Resources (HR) suspended both the Department Manager and myself.

After a week of lost work, HR sent us both for drug testing. My result turned out negative and told to report to work but the Department Manager never came back. Setting up the capricious relationship throughout my tenure.

Never reimbursed for the salary for the lost week of work adhering and following corporate direction.

Advancement

Michael Perlman promoted Bobby Johnson to BrandsMart USA Senior Vice President for Store Operations[1].

The rumor in 2011 when hhgregg came to town, Bobby Johnson leveraged another promotion to Chief Operations Officer.

False Accusation

During an Executive Web Meeting with Michael Perlman and all web related vice presidents and executives in attendance, Bobby Johnson accused me of being a pedophile, yep the Chief Operations Officer of BrandsMart USA thought it was funny to call a employee a pedophile in a corporate meeting, to say the least, it took all of me to not get up and go after him.

A Vice President sitting between us slide back from the conference table, later telling me, they thought I was going through them to get at him.

I left the meeting and refused to attend any meetings he attended. Michael Perlman, with Bobby Johnson sitting directly next to him, claimed he did not hear him say anything, blaming his hearing issues.

However, other executives did hear it and told Michael Perlman supporting my claim.

After a number of weeks not attending the executive meetings, Michael Perlman called me to his office wanting to know why.

Explaining to him that I would not participate in a corporate executive meeting that had an executive call an employee a pedophile and in essence condone it by not doing anything about it.

He told me it was going to be a problem if I had an issue with Bobby Johnson after he just promoted him to Chief Operations Officer of BrandsMart USA.

A few days later Michael Perlman came into my office telling me he needed me in the meetings and what it would take to get me back to attending the meetings.

In hindsight, I should have been more demanding but asked for an apology in person.

Less than an hour later Bobby Johnson was in my office apologizing.

Bobby Johnson was never reprimanded other than being told to personally apologize.

Workplace Relationships

Workplace relationships add an element of complication to the environment even when relationships are between equals. When a supervisor has a relationship with an employee under his management, the dynamics can be toxic for the workplace.

Though the type of employee and employer relationship that is considered appropriate varies from company to company, boundaries exist at almost all companies.

Generally, it is unwise for employers to develop romantic relationships with their employees.

Bobby Johnson has used the BrandsMart USA female staff for his romantic liaisons.

Personally aware of one whom he married as well as being rumored that he had divorced her and married another.

Before Michael Perlman purchased his second home in Dahlonega, Georgia the rumor was that although the whole Atlanta regional BrandsMart USA stores were losing money, Bobby Johnson was would object to closing the locations because he was seeing someone up there and gave him the ability to get away from his relationships in South Florida.
